Now please note that this recipe will make four pie crusts. If you only need one pie crust, then you will divide this recipe by four. If you are making a pie crust that requires a bottom crust and a top crust such as apple pie, then divide the recipe by two. Not sure you want to do the math to reduce this recipe?

Recipe Costing Sanity Saver
Pie Dough
Recipe Yield: 4 shells
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Max Hold Time: 30 days; frozen
Ingredients:
- 1lb unsalted butter, chilled
- 1lb 5 oz pastry or all-purpose flour
- 4 fl oz buttermilk or water
- 0.4 oz salt
- 0.5 oz granulated sugar
Directions:
- Cut butter into medium dice about 3/8 inch
- Sift the flour onto a work surface or into a large bowl
- Add salt to flour and mix. If making a savory pie crust, then add additional spices such as garlic and onion powder. (These are great for chicken pot pie. Grab the recipe here)
- Cut butter into the flour mixture until desired consistency (mealy or flaky) See video for more details.
- Combine buttermilk (water) and sugar in a bowl and whisk.
- Gradually add the buttermilk mixture to your flour mixture.
- Do not add too much liquid.
- Mix gently until the dough holds together.
- Cover with plastic wrap and chill for at least an hour.
- Roll out dough to 1/8 to 1/4 inch thickness on a lightly floured board.
- Line a 9″ pie pan with your crust and flute the dough
