Let’s have a heart-to-heart conversation about running your own bakery business. We work hard to provide open and honest resources for anyone looking to run or start their own bakery business.
There are two BIG mistakes that we see people make in their bakery business. First, we tend to under value ourselves and what we bring to the business. As a cake and bakery owner, you must always remember that a customer is buying the product because they want the handcrafted value that you provide. Customers can get baked products at any store.
Machines make these products in mass production. Your product is made with valuable ingredients and handcrafted individually for your customer. Each product is custom made for the customer, which means you should be charging for your expertise and time. We have written extensively about this on our blog like this post [here] and talk about it on our Podcast [here] and our YouTube channel [here].
Another big issue with pricing is not knowing your costs and just assuming you can times everything by 3 because that is what someone somewhere told you to do. Yes, times 3 may work 80% of the time, but boy oh boy I would hate to be that 20% 😳
I mean why would you put all your time, sweat, and effort into something only to play the odds and hope that your pricing doesn’t fall in that 20% category? Instead of leaving your pricing up to chance, take charge by knowing that you have accounted for all your expenses. Take charge by knowing you are paying yourself. Take charge by knowing that you are also priced to make a profit. You can learn more about how we handle pricing in our business [here].
I know what you are thinking. Why would we share all this information with you? Well, we figure it is a great big world out there and there are plenty of customers out there for all of us to be successful. There is no reason for us to hoard all this information to ourselves. Instead, we want to share with you everything we do so that you can either avoid it in your business or use it to help your business.
But, we are more than just a resource for other bakery businesses. We actually, want to help anyone who is interested in baking and improving their baking skills. That is why we share things like our favorite recipes you can make at home like these Peanut Butter Energy Bites, which are easy enough that my 3yo helps me make them [here].
With that, we are going to share our baking tip of them month:
If you find yourself in a pinch without baking powder, you can always improvise by making a substitute fast-acting leavener.
🧁 2 parts cream of tarter
🧁 1 baking soda
🧁 1 corn starch
Make sure to bake immediately after mixing.
