The other day I was sitting around trying to figure out what to talk about on my Facebook live that week (watch me live every Wednesday here).
Then I had a great epiphany. I would go back to some of my older video’s themes where I talked a lot about… well honestly whatever came to mind.
That’s when it struck me. I should tell you guys about some of the fun baking activities that we have done over the past few years.
You can see my full video here where I talk about all the activities. I, also, wrote a detail blog post to help you plan these baking activities with your kids here.
Just for a frame of reference I have done these baking activities with kids ranging from 2 years old up to 14. We all always have a good time.
Rainbow… well anything
My kids love to turn food into fun colors. In the video, I talk about making grilled cheese and pizza, but honestly, my nine-year-old just reminded me about the time we made rainbow spaghetti. So yeah, it’s a thing around here. For the grilled cheese and pizza, we used food coloring to dye the cheese (mozzarella is best for the grilled cheese).
Bonus: for the spaghetti we put food coloring in the water when we boiled the noodles. This does take a bit longer, but totally worth the effort. This summer we are going to attempt to make rainbow sour dough. Wish us luck.
Decorating Sugar Cookies
We love this project because 1.) it’s fun, but 2.) it tastes great. In the blog post here, I give you our recipe to sugar cookies and homemade icing (I mean who wants store bought crap when you can have the good stuff)
We then take cookie cutters and plastic knives to create all kinds of shapes and designs. Then I let the kiddos have fun decorating the cookies. It can be a big mess, but it’s lots of fun.
Rice Krispies Treats
Along the same line of thinking, we let the kids make and decorate Rice Krispies treats. We get our candies, sprinkles, icing, and pretty much whatever else we can think of out to decorate Rice Krispies treats.
Two bonus notes: Food coloring is a perfect addition to almost any project and Rice Krispies treats are no different. Also, try experimenting with your favorite cereal. You’d be surprised at what you discover.
Edible Play Dough (marshmallow fondant)
This recipe is a huge hit in our house. My younger kids love play dough and enjoy creating shapes and characters with the fondant.
My older kids compete to see who can create the best sculptures. They love to experiment with different techniques. It is a great way to engage their minds and taste delicious at the same time.
If you are looking for some fun baking activities to do with kiddos then we suggest these here. We use them for spring break, Easter, summer; pretty much anytime the kids are out of school, and we want to spend some good fashion, quality time with each other. These activities can even be tweaked to add in educational value especially during those long summer months that are just around the corner.
Hope you and your family enjoy these activities as much as we do.
